My lemon suit
A couple of years ago, Kate Spade had a lemon print in their spring collection. I adored the fabric, but I don't fit into Kate Spade clothes. So I filed it away in my Pretty Things Imagination Folder and moved on. Fast forward to a few weeks ago, when Gertie posted about her new fabric line, available at Joann!
As soon as I saw the lemon print fabric, I absolutely had to have it. My local stores were out of it, but I was going to be in Baton Rouge for a therapy appointment the next day! So I stopped in the Joann there and they had a few yards of each color. I debated between the blue lawn and the black sateen. Eventually I got the black because it just looked richer. And I know I made the right choice.
i had planned to make a dress out of this fabric. But I kept thinking about a friend who had told me I should make a crop top and high waisted skirt set. So I did!
Funny story about this outfit. My husband works nights, and he sleeps all day Sunday. This is prime sewing time, and that's when I made up my lemon outfit. I had finished the skirt, and mostly done the top when he woke up. I had just tried them on together to get the perfect hem length on the top. So I was wearing the lemon skirt with a Star Wars t-shirt when he came in and said "cute skirt!" Then, he noticed the shirt on the ironing board and said, with a look of panic in his eyes, "are you making an entire lemon SUIT?" And thus, the lemon suit was born.
The top is a Scout, shortened significantly. I also did a split hem and made it longer in the back. I was going for a "skin belt" look, with no skin exposure in the back.
The skirt is from Simplicity 1873. I just used the skirt pieces and added a waistband. I did a button and loop closure because I thought this vintage button would be great with the lemon fabric. I also did a centered zipper for the first time, using the glue stick method. Super easy! I can see myself using this a lot in skirts.
So, in the end, I'm not sure how I feel about the crop top + skirt on me. I see other plus size girls rocking it, but it just doesn't feel like ME. Head to toe lemon, though, feels exactly like me.
I am super glad I made these because I think they have promise as separates. The skirt has already been worn multiple times. I've only worn the top with the skirt, though.
